Here's our snapshot of the first few months of growing our food garden from April-June 2023. Look how far we have come since then! Come and be part of this exciting and valuable garden....
Our garden is a shared space where community, collaboration, and co-production come to life. Volunteering at GKG means working together, learning from one another, and growing food that truly reflects the needs and cultures of our community - from culturally appropriate crops to quick-growing, high-yield produce that keeps our market well-stocked with fresh, local food.
Our volunteers are the heartbeat of the garden. From nursery school children planting their first seeds, to families, schools, colleges, and even corporate teams getting stuck in on volunteering days - each person plays a vital role in making our garden thrive. Whether you’re a seasoned grower or a total beginner, there’s a place for you to dig in, connect, and grow with us.
At GKG, we’re proud to be part of the inspiring Egin programme - an initiative designed to unlock the collective power of communities in Wales to take their first steps toward tackling climate change and living more sustainably. Rooted in the Welsh word for "shoots" or "sprouts," Egin is all about helping new ideas grow and take root, especially in communities that are often left out of conversations about climate and sustainability.
Through our involvement with Egin, we’re supporting inclusive, community-led food growing right here in our allotment. By creating accessible spaces and opportunities for people to connect with the land, learn new skills, and grow fresh food together, we’re helping to nurture both environmental resilience and stronger community bonds. Whether it’s planting, sharing knowledge, or just getting our hands in the soil, we’re making space for everyone - especially those most affected by climate change - to be part of the solution.
At GKG, we believe learning should be hands-on, playful, and rooted in the natural world. Inspired by the Froebel approach embraced by our local nursery, our outdoor education welcomes everyone—from toddlers to older adults—to explore, discover, and connect through nature. Our garden is a living classroom, with rich learning spaces like the bug hotel, wormery, polycrub, forest school area, and soon, a wildlife pond.Whether it’s observing mini beasts, growing food, or learning how ecosystems work, there’s something for every age and ability to enjoy. We champion curiosity, creativity, and community-led learning—making our garden a place where lifelong learning can grow, flourish, and inspire.
At GKG, we grow with the seasons, following a carefully planned planting calendar that guides what we sow, nurture, and harvest throughout the year. Working in harmony with nature not only helps us grow healthier crops—it teaches us patience, resilience, and the rhythms of the earth. Our garden is a space where the local nursery school joins us in hands-on growing, learning about the changing seasons and where their food comes from.
From spring greens and summer beans to autumn root veg and hardy winter crops, our beds are filled with a vibrant mix of seasonal produce. We grow everything from salad leaves, kale, and courgettes to pumpkins, herbs, peas, and culturally important crops chosen by our community. Growing seasonally ensures we stay connected to the land and can provide our market and community with fresh, delicious food all year round.
